The Survivor of U533

There was only one German survivor from the sinking of U533 by Sgt. Chapman of 244 Squadron.

The following photo is from the collection of William Henry Chapman RAF, who was ground crew on 244 Squadron at the time (and may have been part of the ground crew for Sgt. Chapman's aircraft)

It has been provided courtesy of his daughter.

William Henry Chapman's notes on the back side of the photograph read:
"Herman Fritz"
"Only survivor from sub sunk by 244 Sqd 16th Oct 1943, picked up 18th Oct 1943. Sunk by Sgt Chapman. O for Orange."

It should be noted that some sources give the survivor's name as "Gunther Schmidt", and the code letter of the aircraft as "C".
